Cattle rancher Henry Ludlow who is confined to a wheelchair and has minimal strength in his arms and hands lives with his daughter Judy. Judy has fallen in love with a neighbor, Antone Rose, a Basque sheepherder who lives with his young brother Nicko. Their mother is dead and their father was murdered in a range war. Although Judy and Antone want to marry, Henry Ludlow is dead set against it. He is so against it that he tells Judy one night to pack as they are leaving the next day. Henry has sold the ranch and the two of them will join the Hale wagon train to go west and away from Antone. However, that night she rides to Antone's wagon to tell him they are leaving. Anone then decides to leave his place to join the wagon train and marry Judy. After the Ludlows join the wagon train, Chris decides to have Duke help Judy which results in him appearing to be interloping which gets Antone's ire up as Henry continues to refuse to say why they shouldn't be married. On a stormy night a single wagon with Jethro Creech and his daughter Ruth approaches the wagon train. Creech demands to see the wagon master. As Chris approaches Creech's team of horses runs away scared by lightening dragging Creech. Creech is able to hold on to the reins and stop the horses. His white horse is part Arabian and very high strung. Later, Baylor Crofoot, the wagon train school teacher, spots the daughter Ruth getting water so he offers to help. This raises the ire of her father who tells Baylor to stay away from Ruth. He only respects those with the courage to stand up to him but so far no one meets the criteria. Jethro sits in on Baylor's class and leaves telling the students book learning is not what they need. Things come to a head when Jethro puts on his medicine man show with his patent elixir that evening and reveals a secret about Ruth. Written by Anonymous

The men are playing and pull Sam Garrett into the scuffle. Sam is moving some cattle with the herd to Sugar Creek and when his shirt is pulled up they learn he has been whipped. He tells them he was in prison. Later his horse stumbles and Sam is seriously injured by the herd. At the same time Clay returns with news that tick fever is ahead of them. Favor sends Wishbone and Rowdy to Sugar Creek for the doctor, tick powder, and to find Sam's son. The doctor refuses to tend to Sam, the store refuses to sell them the powder, and Sam's son Jody refuses to see him. Back at camp they are surprised to see the doctor forced to come by Marcie who owns the saloon in town. The doctor tends to Sam and Marcie tells Favor that Sam was convicted of treason during the war for selling cotton to the north. Favor tells the town he may be forced to take the powder by force.
